"At this stage, what I can confirm to you is that only one person has been transferred to the clinic; they are conscious and receiving medical assistance. We can also confirm that only one person has died. If the number increases, we will inform you," Geladze told journalists.
Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze called the incident an unfortunate accident. According to him, the residential building had been assigned a fifth category of dilapidation and was not subject to rehabilitation.
"The residents knew about this; numerous meetings were held at the Didube district administration. An offer was made regarding their participation in the replacement program, through which we would ensure the demolition of the said building and the construction of a new one.
You know that the implementation of such a program requires 100% consent from the population, which, unfortunately, was not achieved. Several families who agreed have been moved to rented accommodation, but the others have refused at this stage," Kaladze stated.
An investigation into the incident is underway under Article 240 of the Criminal Code, which refers to the violation of safety rules during mining, construction, or other work.
