Between 2009 and 2011, Gvarakidze served as Head of the Investigative Unit of the Regional Prosecutor's Office of Western Georgia. From 2011 to 2016, he was Deputy Regional Prosecutor. Between 2016 and 2019, he headed the Investigative Unit of the Prosecutor’s Office of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara. In 2019, he was appointed Deputy Prosecutor of the Kutaisi District. From 2019 to 2022, he served as Deputy Head of the Investigative Department at the State Inspector’s Service. From 2022 to 2025, he held the same position at the Special Investigation Service. In 2025, he became the Prosecutor of Tbilisi. On June 4, 2025, he was appointed First Deputy Prosecutor General, following the announcement that Prosecutor General Giorgi Gabitashvili, sanctioned by the United Kingdom for human rights violations in Georgia, would be transferred by the ruling Georgian Dream party to the position of Auditor General.
"As for the individuals you mentioned, these people demonstratively refused to comply with the law, which I believe is unfair, in general, because everyone is equal before the law regardless of their political or other views. Accordingly, criminal prosecution will be initiated against everyone who commits a crime," stated Gvarakidze regarding the arrest of opposition politicians who didn’t appear before the so-called investigative commission in the Georgian Dream parliament (whose legitimacy they do not recognize).
Gvarakidze also commented on the Chorchanа checkpoint case, which the so-called investigative commission and the Prosecutor's Office are jointly investigating.
"The Chorchanа episode is crucial, as it involves the violation of our country's territorial integrity and assisting in the occupation of a rather large territory. Intensive investigative actions are being carried out on this case daily; people are being questioned. Everyone who has had any contact with this case will be interrogated. I cannot provide specific details due to the interests of the investigation, because I believe that they should not be disclosed yet. However, as with many other cases, we will periodically provide you with information through various media outlets and keep both you and the public informed, of course, if we have already gathered evidence to bring any specific person to criminal liability. As for Giorgi Gakharia – he, of course, has a connection to this case, and he will be questioned," Gvarakidze said.
When asked if Giorgi Gakharia might face prosecution, the Prosecutor General elected by the Georgian Dream parliament replied: "Let's wait. We cannot say anything about that yet, because the day when Mr. Giorgi Gakharia should appear has not yet come."
