Lührmann: We Support Georgia, Although This Does Not Apply to Its Current Government

The Russian law of the Georgian Dream party threatens independent media and civil society organizations and hinders Georgia from joining the European Union.

Russian law establishes Putin's rules in Georgia, which has eliminated free speech in Russia.

When you are oppressed, there will be no one to cover your problem and stand by you.

Georgian News will resist the Russian intention of the Georgian Dream to the end!

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany, Anna Lührmann

German Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for European and Climate Affairs, Anna Luhrmann, stated before the meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the European Union in Luxembourg that the current government of Georgia is creating obstacles for the country on its path to joining the European Union. In response to this criticism, Kakha Kaladze, the general secretary of Georgian Dream, remarked, "She is simply like Kubilius in a dress."

"We are discussing the current situation in Georgia. It is quite clear that we support Georgia on its way to join the European Union, although this does not apply to the current government of Georgia, which creates obstacles to this path. It is important that the people of Georgia have the right to freely make decisions about their own future. That's why conducting elections in a free and fair environment is crucial," Luhrmann stated.

The general secretary of the ruling party and the mayor of Tbilisi, Kakha Kaladze, responded to the German diplomat's statement by comparing Anna Luhrmann to European Parliamentarian Andrius Kubilius, who frequently criticizes Georgian Dream.

"We have heard many statements of this type, and these statements hold zero value – a straw value.

I don’t know who this lady is. She is simply like Kubilius in a dress. This reflects my current attitude towards them. What they frame and do today is no different from the Soviet Union.

We want freedom, independence, and our sovereignty. Why does Europe have a price? It is due to the fact that there are different states with their own cultures and traditions. This diversity makes the European Union, and Europe in general, interesting. If we have to be labeled the same, what does it matter whether it is the status of the Soviet Union or the European Union? If we have to conform in this way, it’s incredible. This attitude is not acceptable," Kaladze said.

Luhrmann's statement was preceded by a joint statement from the foreign ministers of the Weimar Triangle member states - Germany, France, and Poland - who noted that the actions of the Georgian government have led to the de facto suspension of the country's EU accession process. The Weimar Triangle urged the Georgian government to change its current actions because "The scope and depth of EU-Georgia relations and cooperation are at stake."

Additionally, the German parliament, the Bundestag, adopted a resolution initiated by the ruling coalition titled A European Future for Georgia, which supports Georgia's EU membership but criticizes the "authoritarian and anti-European direction" of the ruling Georgian Dream. The resolution states that this course deliberately jeopardizes Georgia's European future against the wishes of the vast majority of the population.
