It was announced today that Tornike Rizhvadze, who resigned as Chairman of the Adjara Government three months ago, has been wounded. He was admitted to the Geo Hospitals in Sagarejo with a gunshot wound to the chest and later transferred to the First University Clinic in Tbilisi. His condition is critical.
The incident occurred in Sagarejo, at the home of the Maritime Transport Agency Director, Aleksi Akhvlediani's mother. The investigation has been launched under Article 115 of the Criminal Code, which pertains to incitement to suicide.
Government propaganda media spread information that Rizhvadze had written a letter before his suicide attempt, which medical personnel found in his clothes. According to Imedi TV, Rizhvadze’s letter reads:
“Aleko has nothing to do with it, I took it quietly. This man is an example of brotherhood. The reason is one, they accuse me of what (corruption and patronage of the drugs dealers) my father and I have fought against all our lives. I am tired – I have seen both great victories and failures. I ask forgiveness from my family, from the patriarch. Father, you will be the number one man for me in dignity.
Data, grow up to be a man, look after Eli. Mother, I love you. Forgive me brothers, I cannot leave you millions, but I love you. I hope that Mr. Bidzina and the Prime Minister will protect my family.
My friends, employees, family members – all acted on my orders and instructions. Everyone is innocent. I answer for it with my life. Please do not cut me off and do not blame anyone. It was written by me. May God protect my beloved Adjara and Georgia.”
The statement issued by the Ministry of Internal Affairs this morning does not say anything about the letter. The propaganda media has not distributed its photo.
55-year-old Aleksi Akhvlediani was appointed Director of the Maritime Transport Agency in May 2023.
