Ilham Aliyev “sincerely congratulates” Mikheil Kavelashvili on his “election” as President of Georgia.

We are pleased to see that our bilateral relations, built on such strong foundations and based on mutual respect and trust, are now developing comprehensively and successfully.
I am confident that we will make joint efforts to further strengthen and expand our interstate relations and strategic partnership, ensuring the well-being of our countries and peoples, the stability and security of our region, and the realization of its economic potential.
I wish you good health, happiness, and success in your upcoming responsibilities for the prosperity of the friendly people of Georgia,” Aliyev’s letter to Kavelashvili reads.
In his congratulatory message, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko emphasized the importance of restoring “constructive cooperation” between Belarus and Georgia.
“I am confident that the restoration of fruitful and constructive relations between our countries will contribute to the further strengthening of bilateral relations between Belarus and Georgia. I wish you health, successful implementation of your plans, and new achievements for the welfare of your homeland,” Lukashenko’s congratulatory message reads.
Mikheil Kavelashvili also received congratulations from Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. Writing on Platform X, Pashinyan expressed Armenia's anticipation of strengthening its strategic partnership with Georgia and deepening cooperation at all levels. ”Wishing him every success in this vital role! !” the Armenian Prime Minister noted.
On December 14, the illegitimate parliament held elections for the sixth President of Georgia, with the Georgian Dream party electing Mikheil Kavelashvili to the position. He was the sole presidential candidate nominated by the same party.
Mikheil Kavelashvili, 53, is a former football player, MP, and member of the People’s Power party, known for its anti-Western rhetoric. During his nomination for the presidency, Bidzina Ivanishvili, the honorary chairman of Georgian Dream, described Kavelashvili as distinguished by his honesty, fairness, patriotism, and commitment to principles. “By his nature, if you will, by his habit, he is the best embodiment of a Georgian man,” Ivanishvili remarked. Notably, the president-elect of Georgian Dream does not have a higher education.
The inauguration ceremony of Mikheil Kavelashvili as President is scheduled for December 29. Formally, this is the date on which the tenure of the country’s fifth President, Salome Zourabichvili, is set to end. Zourabichvili, however, maintains that she remains the legitimate President and that her mandate will continue until her successor is elected by a legitimately elected parliament.
