Based on the publication, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen has stated that it would be reasonable for the newly created position of Defense Commissioner to be occupied by a representative from Central or Eastern Europe.
Andrius Kubilius, a Member of the European Parliament (European People's Party/Christian Democrats) specializing in foreign affairs, is a potential candidate. He served as Lithuania's Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1990 to 2000 and again from 2008 to 2012. Politico reports that Kubilius is highly respected for his leadership during the 2008 financial crisis.
Kubilius is a strong supporter of Ukraine, advocating for continued military support for Kyiv and calling for Moscow to pay for Ukraine's reconstruction using frozen Russian assets. According to Politico, he has suggested that Vilnius establish a government department or ministry dedicated entirely to Ukrainian issues.
Kubilius also supports the enlargement of the European Union, asserting that it should be the flagship project of the EU for the next five years. He has been a vocal critic of the ruling party in Georgia, believing that the Georgian Dream government is the main obstacle to Georgia's path to EU membership.
