Stephen Doughty wrote on Platform X about his phone call with Bochorishvili:
"Today I reiterated in the clearest terms to Georgian Dream representative Maka Bochorishvili that police violence and arbitrary arrests in Georgia are unacceptable. The UK will consider all options to ensure those responsible are held accountable."
The Georgian Foreign Ministry also released information about the phone call. As per the ministry’s statement, Maka Bochorishvili emphasized the importance of an objective and impartial assessment of the ongoing situation in Georgia.
"The Georgian Foreign Minister expressed regret over the decisions taken by the United Kingdom in relation to Georgia, including postponing the next round of the Strategic Dialogue and suspending programmatic support to the country," the statement reads.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maka Bochorishvili confirmed Georgia's commitment to its European and Euro-Atlantic aspirations.
Protests involving thousands of people have been taking place in Tbilisi since November 28, after the illegitimate Prime Minister, Irakli Kobakhidze, stated at a briefing that Georgia would not prioritize the issue of opening EU accession negotiations until the end of 2028 and would refuse EU budget funding.
Police forces repeatedly dispersed peaceful citizens protesting the suspension of European integration. Special forces physically assaulted both protesters and media representatives. Around 500 people were arrested during the protests on various grounds.
In response to the current events, the United Kingdom has suspended programmatic support to the Georgian government, limited defense cooperation, and reduced engagement with representatives of the Georgian Dream government.
