Giorgi Ramishvili was arrested yesterday, July 6th, at Tbilisi International Airport as he was attempting to depart the country.
According to the Prosecutor's Office, during a security check with an X-ray scanner in the departure terminal, a WALTHER PPK/S 9mm pistol, registered to Ramishvili with a storage permit, was found in his hand luggage. He also had a magazine and seven 9mm rounds of ammunition, which he was allegedly carrying illegally.
Lawyer Irma Chkadua represents Ramishvili. Before the formal charges were filed, Chkadua told journalists that Ramishvili himself would explain how the weapon ended up where it was found.
"Mr. Ramishvili says that something unforeseen happened – this could even be called a mistake. Regarding the questions raised in society, Mr. Ramishvili will have the opportunity to make a statement, at least in written form. [...] He does not link this incident to any political processes," Chkadua stated.
The Prosecutor's Office is requesting pre-trial detention as a measure of restraint for the accused. The court hearing is expected to take place tomorrow.
