"Today at 19:30 I was refused entry into the country of Georgia without reasoning or any further explanation. This is unacceptable even though the local border force doesn’t know why I wasn’t allowed entry. Anyone who can help please write to me," wrote Ray Baseley, who also shared the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia's decision. The reason for the refusal was cited as "not meeting other requirements defined by the legislation of Georgia."
Later, the journalist's partner, Maria Caplina, wrote on X that she was unable to contact him, as the border guards had confiscated his phone and other personal belongings.
Ray Baseley is a freelance journalist covering events in Georgia and Ukraine. According to photos published on Facebook, he was in Tbilisi in May of this year during demonstrations against the Russian Law on so-called Foreign Agents.
