The Russian law of the Georgian Dream party threatens independent media and civil society organizations and hinders Georgia from joining the European Union.

Russian law establishes Putin's rules in Georgia, which has eliminated free speech in Russia.

When you are oppressed, there will be no one to cover your problem and stand by you.

Georgian News will resist the Russian intention of the Georgian Dream to the end!

By the decision of the Central Election Commission, the interim elections of the Parliament of Georgia and the extraordinary elections of the mayor of Gurjaani will be held on October 1. Voters will elect the majority deputy of Gori-Kaspi and the mayor of Gurjaani.

Holding the interim elections of the Parliament became necessary after Giorgi Khojevanishvili, a member of the For Georgia party founded by former Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia, left the mandate and the party. Khojevanishvili was elected as the majority deputy of Gori-Kaspi in the 2020 parliamentary elections. He was a candidate nominated by Georgian Dream. After Giorgi Gakharia resigned as Prime Minister and founded his own party, Giorgi Khojevanishvili, and five other parliamentarians left Georgian Dream and joined Gakharia’s party.

As for the extraordinary elections of the mayor of Gurjaani, the mayor Zurab Utiashvili, who was elected on October 2, 2021, resigned in June 2023. As Utiashvili explained, he had decided to return to the healthcare sector and continue working there with the Georgian Dream team.

The press speaker of the Central Election Commission, Natia Ioseliani, said at the briefing held today that the October 1 elections are of special importance because the CEC will have the opportunity to test electronic technologies in the election process once again before the general elections of 2024.

A total of 133 polling stations will be opened for the interim/extraordinary elections. Voting will be held at 103 polling stations using voter verification, vote registering, and vote counting machines, and 85.3% of the total number of voters will take part in it. Voting in the remaining 30 polling stations will be held by the existing rules, however, the ballots in these stations will be digitized, uploaded to the appropriate secure platform, and be available to any interested party.
