During an interview with the public broadcaster, when asked whether Armenia will receive candidate status, Simonyan answered that Armenia has long shared the democratic system of the European family, and such a perception exists both abroad and in Armenia.
"It is clear to me that this is the most correct and desirable option for us to pursue. The problem lies in the process. We need to understand how we will implement this process. It is not just about submitting an application; we have to bring many things into line with European standards. Yes, this is the value system to which we should aspire and adhere," said Simonian.
According to the chairman of the parliament, Armenia will participate for the first time in the meeting of the heads of the parliaments of the EU countries, which will be held in Spain in the middle of April. "Armenia is invited for the first time, and if I'm not mistaken, not a single post-Soviet country has been invited," he said.
The European Parliament adopted a resolution in which the MEPs support the granting of candidate status to Armenia. The resolution states that "if Armenia continues on the path of sustainable reforms leading to the consolidation of democracy, this could pave the way for a transformative phase in EU-Armenia relations."
In February, the Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, stated that granting EU candidate country status to Georgia has an objective impact on the entire region. In his words, if earlier it was possible to say "Where is the EU and where is our region", now the EU is actually our region.
Armenia's rapprochement with the European Union is taking place against the backdrop of deteriorating Russian-Armenian relations.
