Giorgi Bachiashvili Arrested

According to State Security Service (SSS), Giorgi Bachiashvili, former head of Co-Investment Fund, was arrested near the so-called green border section between the Red Bridge and Sadakhlo.

"On May 26, 2025, an anonymous tip revealed that Giorgi Bachiashvili, a dual citizen of Georgia and the Russian Federation, who is wanted under a red notice and has been convicted, was moving near the so-called green border section between the Red Bridge and Sadakhlo.

As a result of investigative and operational search measures Bachiashvili was arrested.

The investigation is being conducted by the Anti-Corruption Agency of the State Security Service under Article 344, Part 1, of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which pertains to illegal border crossing and carries a penalty of three to five years imprisonment," the SSS stated.

Giorgi Bachiashvili secretly left Georgia on March 4. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs investigation, Bachiashvili secretly crossed into Armenia using a special hiding place in his car and then flew to Qatar using a Russian passport.

On March 10, he was sentenced 11 years in prison in absentia on “cryptocurrency case”. Bachiashvili was sued by Bidzina Ivanishvili, founder and honorary chairman of Georgian Dream. According to the Prosecutor's Office, Bachiashvili transferred only $536,900 to Bidzina Ivanishvili in exchange for the full profit from his investment, while unlawfully appropriating the remaining 8,986 Bitcoins belonging to the investor, valued at approximately $43 million at the time of their appropriation. Giorgi Bachiashvili denies the charges.

Yesterday, May 26, in an article published in the British newspaper The Guardian, Bachiashvili discussed an alleged murder plot, details of his escape, and attempts to prolong Ivanishvili's life.

After Bachiashvili's arrest, his foreign lawyers stated that the former head of the Co-Investment Fund was forcibly returned to Georgia and faces the threat of torture.
