Miriam Lexmann: It’s Time for the EU to Impose Targeted Sanctions Against Ivanishvili

The Russian law of the Georgian Dream party threatens independent media and civil society organizations and hinders Georgia from joining the European Union.

Russian law establishes Putin's rules in Georgia, which has eliminated free speech in Russia.

When you are oppressed, there will be no one to cover your problem and stand by you.

Georgian News will resist the Russian intention of the Georgian Dream to the end!

MEP Miriam Lexmann, the European People's Party group member, has called yesterday's anti-Western messages from Bidzina Ivanishvili, Georgian Dream’s honorary chairman, "utterly shameful." She stated that it is time for the European Union to impose sanctions on him.

“The latest statements of Bidzina Ivanishvili are utterly shameful & only underscore his attempts to wreck Georgia’s democracy & European aspiration. It’s time for the EU to impose targeted sanctions against this oligarch & save Georgia from his clutches,” The MEP writes in social network X.

On April 29, at the protest organized by the ruling Georgian Dream in support of the Russian Law, Bidzina Ivanishvili gave a speech mainly focusing on the global war party, which, as he said, has a "decisive influence on NATO and the European Union" and sees Georgia and Ukraine as merely commodities. Ivanishvili stated that funding of non-governmental organizations from abroad has nothing to do with aid and is solely aimed at taking away Georgia's state sovereignty. The billionaire promised that after the 2024 parliamentary elections, Georgian Dream will have the opportunity to "bring the collective National Movement a strict political and legal sentence," which he believes it deserves for its "9 years of bloody rule and 12 years of 'incitement.'"

Georgian Dream organized a so-called general meeting in front of the parliament in response to the thousands protesting against the Russian law. Active members of the ruling party and public service employees were mobilized from regions to Tbilisi.
