People’s Power Vows to Build a "Healthy Opposition" in an Illegitimate Parliament

The Russian law of the Georgian Dream party threatens independent media and civil society organizations and hinders Georgia from joining the European Union.

Russian law establishes Putin's rules in Georgia, which has eliminated free speech in Russia.

When you are oppressed, there will be no one to cover your problem and stand by you.

The political group People's Power, known for its anti-Western rhetoric, intends to leave the parliamentary majority in the illegitimate parliament and assume the role of a "healthy opposition," Guram Macharashvili announced.

People’s Power participated in the parliamentary elections of October 26, 2024, under the Georgian Dream list. This list also included Mikheil Kavelashvili, who was nominated as a presidential candidate by the Honorary Chairman of Georgian Dream, Bidzina Ivanishvili.

After Kavelashvili’s term was terminated, People’s Power has been represented in the illegitimate parliament by eight so-called deputies: Sozar Subari, Dimitri Khundadze, Guram Macharashvili, Irakli Beraia, Eka Sepashvili, David Kacharava, Zaal Mikeladze, and Viktor Japaridze.

“The problem in Georgia is that there is practically no opposition, no healthy force capable of fulfilling the role of the opposition - to challenge the government for the country’s development and criticize it constructively for the sake of progress. Today, Georgia has a government elected by the people and a so-called radical opposition funded by foreign forces.

Based on this, our political party, People’s Power, has decided to leave the parliamentary majority and establish a healthy opposition in Georgia.

We will show both Georgian society and the international community, which has unfortunately forgotten this concept, what a healthy opposition should look like - what a political force that is not in power but works for the interests of Georgia should represent,” said Macharashvili.

People’s Power was founded in August 2022 by deputies who were fictitiously split from Georgian Dream - Sozar Subari, Dimitri Khundadze, Mikheil Kavelashvili, and Guram Macharashvili. Later, they were joined by Viktor Japaridze, Dachi Beraia, Eka Sepashvili, Davit Kacharava, and Zaal Mikeladze. In the tenth parliament, they remained in the parliamentary majority alongside the Georgian Dream.

The members of People’s Power stated that their goal in separating from the Georgian Dream was to “share the truth with the people.” In reality, they spread the ruling party’s anti-Western messages and attacked the country’s strategic partners, including the United States ambassador.

In early 2023, a bill On Foreign Agents was introduced in parliament under the authorship of People’s Power. The parliamentary majority passed it on the first reading, but following widespread protests, the law was rejected at that time. However, the Russian Law was eventually adopted a year later, on May 28, 2024, with the support of all members of People’s Power.
