The committee discussion, attended by de facto President Aslan Bzhania, took place against the backdrop of a protest. In front of the de facto parliament, there was a confrontation between law enforcement officers and rally participants. Based on available information, one of the opponents of the law on apartments, oppositionist Jansugh Adleiba, drove to the parliament and fired several shots into the air from a hunting rifle.
A search has been announced for Adleiba. The so-called Ministry of Internal Affairs stated that he "fired in a public place, in the vicinity of the administrative building of the People's Assembly of the Republic of Abkhazia, in the direction of law enforcement officers of the Republic of Abkhazia, who were working in the above-mentioned area."
During the committee session, the security of the so-called Parliament building was strengthened. The protest took place near the fence erected in June around the building.
According to the decision of the so called Economic Policy and Reforms Committee, the draft law "On Measures to Raise the Level of Socio-Economic Development of Ochamchire, Tkvarcheli, and Gali Districts" will be discussed at the next session of the so-called Parliament of Abkhazia. The head of the committee, Rezo Zantaria, stated that the pilot project envisages construction on 150 hectares.
"Secret sale of land" is how the opponents of the law describe it. De facto member of parliament Kan Kvarchia claims that the construction of apartments will give Abkhazia "absolutely nothing" economically.
"This is just a hidden scheme, an opportunity for people to enter Abkhazia and obtain real estate. Considering our small population, this could lead to a demographic explosion that will not benefit us," Kvarchia said in an interview with local media.
