President Salome Zourabichvili met with a delegation of parliamentarians from EU countries, after which she stated that the visit serves as yet another sign of the EU's support for Georgia.
“Their arrival here today, when Georgia is entering a deep political crisis, is once again a symbol of this support. It demonstrates that Europe has not abandoned us and still believes in Georgia’s European future, which has been expressed time and again over the past 33 years. Every time the European principles and hope for a European future were in question, the people of Georgia and society came out to defend them,” said Zourabichvili during a press conference held after the meeting.
As Zourabichvili said, Georgia's population, which is European and democratic, currently does not have a democratic government.
“We have a one-party government, which has practically taken control of all the institutions in this country, and we saw the results in this election. This is a one-party-managed election, manipulated with some external help, but ultimately one-party-controlled and rigged. That’s why we are entering a crisis.
Based on yesterday's statements from the head of the Central Election Commission, it is clear what decision will be made. There can be no surprises here. The crisis is imminent, and our friends are here to stand with us, to help find ways for Georgia to overcome this crisis. And we will overcome it. At some point, in a fair manner, we will return to new elections so that Georgia can have a legitimate parliament, a legitimate government, and a legitimate new president when the time comes. This is our path. Our path is one of stability, democracy, and Europe. There is no other way for Georgia, and our friends who are here are deeply convinced of this with us,” said President Zourabichvili.
The delegation includes the chairpersons of the foreign relations committees of the parliaments of Germany, Finland, Sweden, France, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Poland. The Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia, Shalva Papuashvili, and the ruling party Georgian Dream declined to attend their meeting.
