Zurabishvili: Elections Should Be Parliamentary First, Then Local, or Held Jointly

“In the autumn of 2025, elections should first be parliamentary, then local, or, at the very least, held jointly,” stated Salome Zurabishvili, Georgia's fifth president, while speaking at an event dedicated to Independence Day in Tbilisi.

“Georgian Dream brought up the topic of local elections, just as they previously said the opposition would enter parliament - but nobody did. Similarly, nobody intends to run in local elections if held under Georgian Dream’s rules and manipulation. Instead, probably everyone intends to participate in elections - these elections should first be parliamentary and then local, or jointly parliamentary and local. For this, preparation is necessary, and new rules that we created within the Resistance Platform framework, will be our conditions for the elections. It is important to prepare an entire army of observers. This should already be started. The diaspora must awaken and begin registration, so it is not unprepared and late at the last minute. This preparation is common, so that all together, the opposition, can defend everyone's vote. This is the formula for victory. I am convinced of this, and it is our duty to see it through to the end," stated Salome Zurabishvili.

According to Zurabishvili, the Georgian Dream is trying to sow discord and division between society and political parties.

"We all know very well that no single party can achieve anything alone.

“Dictatorships have only one method – to “divide and conquer”. The Georgian Dream is no longer capable of anything, and its sole tool and objective is to sow division between society and political parties.  We must not allow this. We know very well that we need unity. That's why we are working on this and created the Resistance Platform,” said Salome Zurabishvili.

The fifth president emphasized that "it is everyone's achievement that seven months after the elections, the illegitimate government is not recognized."

"The second result is the sanctions, which directly concern those individuals responsible for the brutal violence we witnessed in this country. Those who assist Russia in this country and cooperate with Russia are sanctioned. This is just the beginning of a wave of sanctions that will continue and target responsible individuals, not the Georgian people.

This distinction between Georgia and the so-called government is very important and our partners have understood very well that on one side stands Georgia, the entire society, which wants its future in Europe, freedom, and independence, and on the other side stand people who represent nothing and no one but their own and the interests of their northern neighbor," Zurabishvili stated.

Local government elections in Georgia are scheduled for October 4, 2025. None of the opposition parties that won mandates in the October 26, 2024 parliamentary elections recognize the election results, and the legitimacy of the Georgian Dream government, and are demanding new parliamentary elections.
