Based on information from the Bulgarian Prosecutor's Office, the trailer entered Georgia from Kyrgyzstan by land at the end of July, after which it was transported from Batumi port to Bulgaria. From Bulgaria, it was supposed to continue to Alexandroupolis, Greece.
"We are dealing with heroin smuggling via the so-called Caucasian route," said Stefan Bakalov, head of the department for combating illegal drug trafficking.
The narcotics were discovered after customs officials inspected the trailer following an unusually long stay at the port. According to the documents, it was transporting four cable-laying vehicles, but an X-ray examination revealed cavities in the vehicles where the drugs were concealed.
The prosecutor's office has not arrested anyone in connection with the case. According to local media, drug trafficking in Bulgaria is punishable by 15 to 20 years in prison.
Georgian law enforcement agencies have not responded to the information released by the Bulgarian Prosecutor's Office.
