An independent deputy of the parliament of Georgia, Teona Akubardia, stepped up with the initiative that leading up to July 11-12 NATO summit, the parliament should produce a joint statement, which will outline not just Georgia’s desire to join the alliance, but a request for support to the leaders of the member countries.

While speaking at today's plenary session of the Parliament, Akubardia pointed out that it is still unknown whether the Prime Minister of Georgia will take part in the summit at all, and what the country's expectations are from NATO, especially after Irakli Garibashvili named NATO expansion and desire to join the alliance as the reasons for Russia's aggression against Ukraine.
“Due to the fact that not a single resolution was passed in the Parliament of Georgia after Russia began to deviate from the international agenda under the pretext of NATO expansion and then aggression against Ukraine, we did not make any parliamentary appeals to NATO members and leaders. Now that the NATO summit is being held in Vilnius, where President Zelensky will be represented as the leader of Ukraine, I call on every member of the parliament, even though the government still isn't disclosing whether the prime minister will be at the summit, to make a joint appeal.
Let's appeal to the NATO member countries so that once again, along with Georgia's desire to become a member of the alliance, we request support from the member states, as it is the most important security umbrella for Georgia and a choice enshrined in the constitution, despite the anti-Western statements made by the government, including the Prime Minister,” stated Akubardia.
The opposition MP called on the members of Georgian Dream to state their opinion on this matter.
A few days ago, during his speech at the second summit of the European Political Union (EPC) in Moldova, President Volodymyr Zelensky said that all European states that border Russia and don't wish to be disintegrated by Russia should become full-fledged members of the European Union and NATO. According to Zelensky, Ukraine expects an invitation to join the alliance from the NATO summit, and security guarantees on the way to joining.
