BRICS is an intergovernmental organization established in 2006. The acronym represents the first letters of the names of five countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The goal of BRICS is to compete economically with the developed countries of North America and Western Europe and to achieve dominance in the global economy. As of January 2024, Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates have joined the organization.
Before applying for BRICS membership, Russian President Vladimir Putin made a state visit to Azerbaijan on August 18-19.
Azerbaijan's bid for BRICS membership is also supported by China. This support was highlighted in the joint declaration on the establishment of a strategic partnership between Azerbaijan and China, which was adopted on July 3 at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan.
The next BRICS summit is scheduled to take place from October 22-24 in Kazan, the capital of the Tatarstan Republic in Russia.
