Borrell Urges Government to Repeal Homophobic Law

The Russian law of the Georgian Dream party threatens independent media and civil society organizations and hinders Georgia from joining the European Union.

Russian law establishes Putin's rules in Georgia, which has eliminated free speech in Russia.

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell responded to the adoption of a homophobic legislative package by the Georgian Parliament, urging the Georgian authorities to withdraw it.

“The Georgian Parliament adopted laws on ‘family values and protection of minors’ which will undermine the fundamental rights of the people and increase discrimination & stigmatisation. I call on Georgia to withdraw this legislation, further derailing the country from its EU path,” writes Josep Borrell on X.

The legislative package, which proposes restricting the rights of LGBT people and introducing censorship, was adopted by the Parliament of the tenth convocation at its final meeting on September 17. It received support from 84 MPs, with no votes against it. The majority of opposition MPs did not attend the session.

The Embassy of the United Kingdom also urged the Georgian authorities to review the legislative package. The embassy stated that it undermines fundamental human rights, including freedom of expression and assembly, and poses a risk of stigmatizing and discriminating against part of Georgia's population. It emphasized that these legislative changes, along with the Russian law, "restrictions on both civil society and individual Georgians and call into question the breadth of the UK Georgia relationship".
