“massive peaceful demonstration of civil society in Tbilisi against the “Russian law, spetsnaz with water and gas canons ready to pass to action against civilians defending their European future. Arrests are ongoing. Georgia will not surrender to resovietisation!” wrote Zurabishvili on social network X.
The president also notes that before the legal draft was voted on, the Georgian Dream majority expelled all opposition parliamentarians from the session.
After a 12-hour discussion, the Parliament's Legal Affairs Committee endorsed the bill restricting independent media and public organizations. Mamuka Mdinaradze, one of the authors of the bill and the leader of the majority, announced that it would be brought up for consideration at the plenary session this week.
Thousands of people have gathered for a peaceful demonstration near the Parliament building. They declare that they will not allow the adoption of the law that would "damage Georgia's European future."
The police have arrested several participants of the rally. Special forces and special equipment, including a water jet machine, have been mobilized to the place.
The Internal Affairs Ministry is urging demonstrators to comply with the "legal demand" of the police, not to exceed the norms established by the law on freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. Otherwise, "law enforcement officers will use special means provided by law to maintain order."
