“A resolution will be adopted today to set this date. First and foremost, the president should rely solely on the will of the Georgian people. We were deeply disappointed when Georgia’s presidents were influenced by external factors and controlled by foreign patrons. This must not be allowed under any circumstances,” said Tengiz Sharmanashvili.
The Georgian Dream party plans to elect and inaugurate the president by the end of 2024. According to MP Vladimer Bozhadze, “Georgia will have a new president in the new year.”
Majority leader Mamuka Mdinaradze ruled out the possibility of Bidzina Ivanishvili, the honorary chairman of Georgian Dream, being a presidential candidate.
“The subject of intense discussion among the leaders was what kind of president Georgia should have. Our consensus - shared by everyone, from Mr. Bidzina to perhaps the most ordinary soldier of the Georgian Dream - is that the primary criterion must be national. The president must be Georgian in spirit and heart. By this, I do not mean genetics. If I may not sound overly sentimental or exaggerated, the president must embody the Georgian spirit and unwavering dedication to the country.
Yes, we have made our choice. We can say we are 99% certain,” said Mdinaradze.
According to the TV company Mtavari Arkhi, Georgian Dream is considering former Prime Minister Irakli Gharibashvili and Konstantine Gamsakhurdia, Director General of the National Library of the Parliament of Georgia, as potential presidential candidates.
Salome Zourabichvili, who ran as an independent candidate supported by Georgian Dream in the 2018 presidential election, is the last president to be directly elected by universal suffrage. The sixth president will be chosen by a 300-member electoral college, which will include members of the Georgian Parliament, representatives of the autonomous republics of Abkhazia and Adjara, and representatives of local governments. The election will be held in Parliament. As per the constitution, a minimum of 30 members of the electoral college are required to nominate a presidential candidate.
