On December 4, prior to the announcement of his resignation, Giorgi Gvimradze wrote on his personal Facebook page that he was responsible for the interview with American Kimberly Lowe. The interview, aired yesterday on the Public Broadcaster’s Channel One, depicted her as a potential representative of the Trump administration in the European Union.
In the interview, Kimberly Lowe stated that the Georgian government did not intend to halt negotiations on joining the European Union, but there were numerous issues where U.S.-Georgia relations had deteriorated. According to her, “With the new Trump administration, this will improve, and we are going to help you reopen these negotiations.” These remarks, aligning with the messages of the Georgian Dream party, were also broadcast by the government-aligned propaganda channel, Imedi. However, no information about Kimberly Lowe's potential role in the Trump administration is available online.
Gvimradze explained on Facebook that Lowe was interviewed personally and was not introduced as a representative of the future administration.
“She could potentially become what she claims at this stage, which is why she said so. However, the fact that she is a member of the Republican Party and was a Senate candidate is easily verifiable. Her connections with individuals already identified as members of the future Trump administration are also traceable. Additionally, Ms. Kimberly has not said anything that other individuals close to Trump have not already stated. Thus, her statements largely align with the main messages of Trump’s policies, which is significant. Accordingly, I, and only I, bear full responsibility for publishing specific excerpts of this interview,” Gvimradze clarified.
Giorgi Gvimradze has served as the Director of the News and Current Affairs Unit of the Public Broadcaster since October 2015.
