Police Colonel Irakli Shaishmelashvili himself shared a plaque addressed to the Minister of Internal Affairs, Vakhtang Gomelauri, on the social network Facebook, accompanied by the flags of Georgia and the European Union.
"Please, due to family circumstances, release me from my position and dismiss me from the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia ranks," wrote Irakli Shaishmelashvili.
For the seventh consecutive day, massive rallies have been taking place on Rustaveli Avenue. Citizens protesting the decision of Georgian Dream to suspend the European integration process are being brutally harassed by police forces. Tear gas, water cannons, and other special means have been used against protesters. Reports suggest that rubber bullets have also been deployed. Over 300 participants in the rallies have been arrested, many of whom were beaten by special forces.
On November 28, illegitimate Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced that Georgia would not prioritize opening accession negotiations until the end of 2028 and would reject EU budget grants.
Public officials have also joined in protesting the decision. Giorgi Gabekhadze, a senior instructor in the Tactical Training Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Academy, has resigned.
In recent days, Georgia’s ambassadors to the USA, Bulgaria, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, and Lithuania, as well as the acting ambassador to Italy, have resigned. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Teimuraz Janjalia has also stepped down.
