Irakli Beraia became a member of Parliament in 2016, representing the ruling Georgian Dream party. From 2015 to 2016, he served as the director of the Information and Analytical Department of the State Security Service. Prior to that, from 2012 to 2015, he worked as the director of the Reforms and Development Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. In 2012, Beraya was the coordinator of Georgian Dream in Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti.
Irakli Beraia replaced Major General Shalva Lomidze as the head of the Intelligence Service. The Prime Minister ordered Lomidze's dismissal on April 3.
"Irakli Beraia lacks both education and relevant experience in the intelligence service. During his time in parliament, he merely fulfilled the duties of the special service and remained loyal to the Georgian Dream. He possesses no other competence in this field. This appointment is disastrous for our intelligence service, especially at a time when the country's security is facing numerous challenges.
It seems that Irakli Kobakhidze has chosen his loyal man over a professional, Shalva Lomidze, who has been working in the intelligence service since 2014," said MP Teona Akubardia, who was Beraia's deputy in the Defense and Security Committee.
The Intelligence Service of Georgia is the primary intelligence institution in the state, and its head serves as the prime minister's adviser on intelligence matters.
