"You can see that the current administration is trying to leave as difficult a legacy as possible for the new administration, the Trump administration. They are doing this in relation to Ukraine, and now they are doing it with Georgia as well. However, this cannot have any principled significance. We will, of course, wait for the new administration and discuss everything with them. Therefore, this is a temporary event, just like Salome Zourabichvili," Irakli Kobakhidze said at today's briefing.
When asked whether there is communication with the future administration, Kobakhidze responded that there has been indirect communication from their side [the illegitimate government of Georgia], and they aim to establish direct communication as well.
Kobakhidze was also asked if he is aware of the critical stance of Republican Congressman and Chairman of the Helsinki Commission, Joe Wilson, toward the government of Georgia.
Joe Wilson is considered a candidate for the chairmanship of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the U.S. House of Representatives. Recently, he stated that the de facto government of Georgian Dream is illegitimate. The congressman believes that the U.S. should sanction "the illegitimate Russian puppets attacking the Georgian people and denying them their sovereignty, including Bidzina Ivanishvili and his cronies."
"The priority for us is the Trump administration. This is the main priority. everything else is secondary. As Trump says, so be it. Before that, someone else said something, and the Helsinki Commission followed suit. Whatever Trump says, it will be. Therefore, the main thing for us is the relationship with Donald Trump," said Irakli Kobakhidze.
On November 30, the U.S. State Department suspended its strategic partnership with Georgia due to the anti-democratic actions of Georgian Dream. According to Matthew Miller, the State Department's spokesperson, the decision by Georgian Dream to suspend the process of Georgia’s accession to the European Union contradicts the promise made to the Georgian people, which is enshrined in the constitution as the aspiration for full integration into the European Union and NATO.
