Man, 36, Arrested in Samtredia for Neighbor's Intentional Murder

Employees of the Imereti Police Department have arrested a 36-year-old man in Samtredia on charges of intentionally murdering a neighboring woman.

The murder occurred on the morning of August 20. The investigation revealed that the suspect inflicted fatal injuries on a 72-year-old woman with a cold weapon and then fled the scene. Based on  information from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the man has a prior criminal record.

Neighbors reported that the woman sustained four wounds and died before the ambulance arrived. The case is being investigated under Article 108 of the Criminal Code, which pertains to intentional murder. The crime is punishable by 10 to 15 years of imprisonment.

Between 2014 and 2023, more than 200 women were killed in Georgia: 33 in 2014, 17 in 2015, 28 in 2016, 22 in 2017, 18 in 2018, 15 in 2019, 22 in 2020, 18 in 2021, 22 in 2022, and 24 in 2023.

There have been several high-profile cases of femicide this year. On May 22, in Rustavi, a 27-year-old man shot and killed his 21-year-old wife and 48-year-old sister-in-law. After committing the murders, he surrendered to the police. On February 28, 21-year-old Keti Javakhishvili was killed in the Lilo settlement of Tbilisi. 21 year old Otar Tsindeliani was arrested on charges of intentional murder committed with extreme cruelty. On January 9, 27-year-old Ketevan Ediberidze was killed in Tbilisi, and on January 1, 36-year-old Irma Beridze was killed in Batumi. In both cases, the husbands were arrested on murder charges.
