On September 12, 2023, ‘’Members of the Parliament of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze, Shalva Papuashvili, Mamuka Mdinaradze, and others (a total of 80 MPs) applied to the Constitutional Court for the impeachment of the President of Georgia’’ with constitutional submissions.
Chairman of the ruling party Georgian Dream, Irakli Kobakhidze, said on September 1 that they are starting the impeachment procedure of the President of Georgia Salome Zourabichvili. The party accuses the president of flagrant violation of the constitution, as despite the government's refusal, Salome Zourabichvili started meetings with European leaders in support of granting Georgia the status of a candidate country for EU membership.
The Government of Georgia denied the President's visits to Ukraine, Germany, Poland, Switzerland, Belgium, Denmark, the Arab Emirates, Israel, Bulgaria, and the Czech Republic, on the basis that the implementation of the country's foreign policy is the exclusive authority of the Georgian government.
Despite the government's refusal, the president began meeting with European leaders anyway, and said ‘’Everyone should Forget about Dreams of my Deposal.’’
If the Constitutional Court confirms in its conclusion that the President has indeed violated the Constitution, the votes of 100 deputies are needed to unseat Salome Zourabichvili, while Georgian Dream has only 84 members in the Parliament. The opposition says that it will not support the impeachment of the president.
