Ruslan Abashidze Resigns as Chairman of Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia’s Government

The Russian law of the Georgian Dream party threatens independent media and civil society organizations and hinders Georgia from joining the European Union.

Russian law establishes Putin's rules in Georgia, which has eliminated free speech in Russia.

Ruslan Abashidze, who has served as Chairman of the Government of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia since 2019, has resigned. According to Abashidze, his decision to step down was his own.

“Today, I am stepping down from my position as Chairman of the Government of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia. Since 2019, during my tenure as Chairman, my team and I have faced many challenges to protect the interests of our society. We have laid the groundwork for numerous new initiatives and achieved significant results,” Ruslan Abashidze wrote on social media.

Abashidze thanked the members of the Abkhazian government and the Supreme Council, as well as the executive and legislative authorities of Georgia, and the representatives of the diplomatic corps and international organizations accredited in Georgia. He acknowledged their involvement in implementing several important projects and events to support the displaced population from Abkhazia.

“I would like to express my special gratitude to the society of Abkhazia. It has been both a great honor and a significant responsibility for me to serve them and work together to bring us closer to our goal of uniting divided societies and restoring our country’s territorial integrity. I believe that with our government’s consistent peace policy and the support of the international community, we will achieve our shared goal of de-occupation, peaceful development, and ensuring stability,” Ruslan Abashidze said.

Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze thanked Ruslan Abashidze for his four years of service. He emphasized that it is now crucial for the Chairman of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia to be appointed promptly. This decision will be made by the Supreme Council of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia in consultation with the Government of Georgia. “We are ready for consultations,” said Kobakhidze. The Prime Minister also suggested it would be beneficial if Ruslan Abashidze remained in state service.
