At a press conference held before the conclusion of the last session of the spring term, Matvienko was asked whether there has been any contact between members of parliament ahead of the parliamentary elections scheduled for October in Georgia. She responded,
"Unfortunately, there are no contacts yet - certainly not due to us. Complex political processes are taking place in Georgia, and many things are being reconsidered. Elections will be held in October, and the results will determine the country's economic, social, and political course. A new parliament will be elected.
If Georgia expresses a desire for dialogue, we are ready for it, despite the lack of diplomatic relations. This is the mission of members of parliament, the mission of parliamentarians. They are elected by the people to conduct parliamentary diplomacy, build bridges, and restore friendships. Therefore, we are ready, but of course, this is a two-way street," Matviyenko said.
Matviyenko stated that despite the current situation in Georgia, the Georgian people are still respected in Russia as before.
"As we have always sought to develop and maintain friendly, cultural, and humanitarian ties with Georgians, this remains the same today. Do you know how many tourists come to Georgia and how much respect they have for the culture, cuisine, and historical-architectural monuments of the Georgian people?! That is why the Georgian people are close to us; they are friends.
Let's see how the election campaign will conclude. It is evident that strong external pressure is being exerted on Georgia using well-known scenarios and instruments. Ultimately, the decision will be made by the Georgian people," said Valentina Matviyenko.
A month ago, the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Maria Zakharova, stated that Russia is ready to move towards the restoration of diplomatic relations with Georgia and welcomes the initiative of Georgian politicians.
