In commemoration of the 79th anniversary of the victory over fascism, the Government of Georgia has decided to grant 2000 GEL to participants of the Second World War and 1000 GEL to family members of those deceased in the war.

Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has signed a decree entrusting the State Service of Veterans Affairs with the responsibility of administering the social services agency across the entirety of Georgia. Additionally, the Tbilisi City Hall is assigned the task of submitting the data of World War II participants and family members of those who perished in the Second World War, registered in the Tbilisi Municipality, no later than May 5th.
In previous years, a one-time aid of 1000 GEL was provided to participants of the Second World War, while family members of the deceased received 500 GEL. Family members eligible for this aid include the spouse of an individual who perished in World War II and a child with disabilities since childhood, both of whom are registered in the database of the State Service of Veterans Affairs.
The 2023 data reveals that there are 114 participants of the Second World War residing in Georgia. The State Department of Veterans Affairs reports that the majority of them are over a century old. Among them, the oldest is Aleksandre Buskivadze, a 104-year-old resident of Zestafoni municipality.
Victory over fascism day is commemorated in Georgia on May 9. World War II commenced in 1939 and concluded in 1945 with the surrender of the Wehrmacht, the armed forces of Nazi Germany. The state of war officially ended in Europe on May 8, 1945, at Moscow time on May 9, and in Asia on September 2, 1945, following Japan's capitulation. Approximately 50 million people perished in the war. Over 700,000 soldiers were conscripted into the Soviet army from Georgia, with more than 300,000 of them failing to return alive from the front. Among the republics of the former Soviet Union, Georgia had the highest number of casualties during the Second World War.
