Sergei Shamba, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of occupied Abkhazia, stated that the ultimate goal of Abkhazia is to join the United Nations (UN). However, due to pressure from the United States and the European Union, it is still challenging for Abkhazia to establish contacts with other countries and gain recognition.

"The ultimate goal of the Republic of Abkhazia is, of course, to join the United Nations. This is the final aim of our pursuit for broad international recognition of our country. All of this is logically interconnected. Naturally, we understand that this is a very challenging process. The policy of double standards that we face has not been abolished.
A significant obstacle is the policy of the West, particularly that of the United States and the European Union. Abkhazia has had negative experiences when the United States and its partners continued to exert considerable pressure on countries with which the republic had already established diplomatic relations. Therefore, we aim to establish contacts in regions of the world where Western countries do not have substantial influence and cannot exert direct pressure on any given country.
Despite all the difficulties and significant pressure from the collective West, we continue to seek opportunities to establish new connections and contacts in various regions of the world, looking for new partners. In these matters, we rely on the support of our strategic ally, the Russian Federation," the so-called Minister of Foreign Affairs told the Russian publication Izvestia.
Sergei Shamba expressed hope that, in the near future, the number of countries recognizing Abkhazia as a sovereign and independent state will increase.
Russia was the first country to recognize the independence of the occupied territories of Georgia - Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region (so-called South Ossetia) - after the August 2008 war. To date, four more states have made this decision: Nicaragua, Venezuela, Nauru, and Syria. Vanuatu and Tuvalu have since withdrawn their recognition.
