The investigation has been initiated under Part 1 of Article 115 of the Criminal Code, which pertains to incitement to suicide. The Military Police Department typically initiates investigations into the death of a soldier under this article.
The Ministry of Defense expresses its sorrow over the death of the serviceman and extends its condolences to the family.
“All necessary procedural and investigative actions are being carried out as part of the investigation,” the ministry announced.
This marks the third case this year in which a serviceman's death has led to an investigation under Article 115 of the Criminal Code.
On January 11, 2024, 41-year-old Corporal Irakli Apriamashvili was found hanged in a forest near the village of Akhalsheni, in Gori Municipality. On February 15, three of the deceased’s colleagues were arrested on charges of gang violence and incitement to suicide.
On May 28, another suicide occurred in the Gori Municipality. Specifically, according to the Ministry of Defense, 19-year-old Private First Class Omar Chalabashvili fatally shot himself with an automatic weapon at a checkpoint located on the territory of one of the military units of the Defense Forces.
