During the last 1 year, as of September 1, 32% of enterprises had job openings, which totaled at 140,000 jobs. This, of course, is alarming,’’ said Prime Minister Irakli Gharibashvili during his speech at the presentation of the new vision for the development of professional education.

Gharibashvili emphasized once again the notion that the country has strong economic growth, but suffers a shortage of qualified labor in the market.
‘’One of the main challenges is the shortage of skilled workforce in the market. We have strong economic growth, but insufficient supply, so to speak, of qualified workers, which is a serious problem. We had the opposite situation 2-3 years ago. Today things have changed drastically. To give you an example, based on the vacancies received by the employment agency of the Ministry of Health from January through September, areas of greatest demand were identified, these were wholesale and retail trade, hotel industry, hospitality, food service, such as restaurant business, and so on.
Also, administrative and support services and healthcare and social services. In total, about 10,000 vacancies have been recorded in the agency as of today,’’ said Gharibashvili.
He also pointed out that the government has quadrupled the budget for professional education since coming to power in 2012, 30 public professional colleges have been established and their budget this year is 95 million GEL.
Gharibashvili once again called on the statistical data at his disposal to assert that poverty and unemployment have dropped in the last 3 years.
‘’Poverty and unemployment are at historic lows today. If we recall the year 2012, the poverty rate was about 30% and unemployment – over 27%. By today, they have dropped to 15% and 17%, respectively.
More than half a million people overcame poverty in Georgia in the last 10 years.
To answer today’s challenge, we have developed an interesting concept,’’ stated the Prime Minister.
Within the framework of the new vision for the development of professional education, the government is starting to integrate vocational education in schools, which, according to the government's expectations, will help students develop specialized skills from an early age and equip them for a specific profession. After that, they will have the opportunity to decide for themselves whether to continue their studies in higher education institutions.
