Trump and Sheinbaum Discuss Migration Through Mexican Border to U.S.

US President-elect Donald Trump stated that he had a "very productive conversation" with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who agreed to stop migration to the US through Mexico. Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico has been working to resolve the migration issue for some time.

"She has agreed to stop Migration through Mexico, and into the United States, effectively closing our Southern Border,," Trump said Wednesday after a phone call with the Mexican president.

Sheinbaum quickly responded, stating that Mexico's position is not to close the border.

"During my conversation with President Trump, I explained to him the complex strategy that Mexico is pursuing to address the migration problem while respecting human rights," the Mexican president wrote on Platform X.

She noted that migrant caravans are not reaching the northern, or U.S., border because Mexico is taking care of them.

"We reiterate that Mexico's position is not to close the border but to build bridges between governments and peoples," said Mexico’s first female president. Sheinbaum was elected to the position in October.

The administration of Donald Trump, elected for a second term as U.S. president, will begin its work on January 20, following his inauguration. Immigration was a key issue in Trump's 2024 campaign, during which he focused on domestic enforcement. As the BBC reports, after his election, Trump reiterated his campaign promise to mass-deport illegal immigrants, stating that he intends to declare a national emergency and use the U.S. military to implement his plan. During his previous administration, about 1.5 million people were deported, both from the border and within the U.S. According to the BBC, the statistics have been similar during the Biden administration.
