Amid the developments in Georgia concerning the Russian Law, German MEP Viola von Cramon, the Green Party member, is urging the European Union to cease funding projects of the Georgian executive and to impose sanctions on Bidzina Ivanishvili, the ruling Georgian Dream leader.

Today, May 1, the General Director of the European Commission for Neighborhood and Enlargement Negotiations, Gert Jan Koopman, will visit Georgia. Viola von Cramon responded to the statement issued by the EU representative office, indicating that during the visit on May 1-2, Koopman will also inaugurate several projects financed by the European Union.
“Don’t think this is the moment to announce NEW projects with the Georgian government but the EU should rather stop EU funds for the executive level and organise sanctions against Bidzina Ivanishvili as soon as possible. This is what people in Georgia expect and what they deserve.
Please use the visit today to tell the Georgian authorities to STOP beating up their people. No more violence and brutality against peaceful protesters. Tell them to withdraw from the Russian Law - no more nice projects & happy pics with Georgian officials”, Viola von Cramon writes.
On April 30, concurrently with the second reading discussion of the Russian Law at the Parliament's plenary session, another rally took place in Tbilisi. Citizens blocked Rustaveli Avenue, and some approached the Parliament's entrances, where deputies of the Georgian Dream party, authors and supporters of the Russian law, were expected to exit. The Special Tasks Department Employees and various units of the Internal Affairs Ministry forcibly removed the protesters. Pepper spray, tear gas, and water cannons were used to disperse the peaceful demonstration. Security personnel physically assaulted the young demonstrators.
The United National Movement chairman and Parliament Member, Levan Khabeishvili, stated that he was beaten by special forces, resulting in broken nasal bones, broken teeth, and a damaged eye. The Public Defender, Levan Ioseliani, affirmed that the rally was peaceful and there was no justification for the use of force by the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The Internal Affairs Ministry arrested 63 people at the rally, citing petty hooliganism and disobedience to the legal demands of the police as the administrative reasons.
