21-Year-Old Injured During Rally Dispersal on Life Support

The Russian law of the Georgian Dream party threatens independent media and civil society organizations and hinders Georgia from joining the European Union.

Russian law establishes Putin's rules in Georgia, which has eliminated free speech in Russia.

When you are oppressed, there will be no one to cover your problem and stand by you.

Aleko Tirkia, 21, who was injured during the crackdown on a protest rally on the night of December 2, underwent emergency surgery at Ingorokva Clinic for fractures of the forehead and eye socket, as well as brain bruising.

According to Nino Kharaishvili, the head of the neurological department at Ingorokva Clinic, the patient's condition is stable.

"A 21-year-old patient was admitted with an open scalp wound, a fracture of the frontal bone and the upper wall of the orbit, a contusion injury to the frontal lobe, and traumatic hemorrhaging in the meninges. Currently, the integrity of the eyeballs has been preserved without any traumatic injury. He was immediately transferred to the operating room, where the damaged fragments were excised. At present, the patient's condition is stable, and he continues to receive treatment in the intensive care unit with stable parameters. A follow-up computed tomography scan showed no negative dynamics," the doctor said.

Aleko Tirkia was brought to the clinic by an emergency medical team at approximately 4:00 AM. According to Nino Kharaishvili, before losing consciousness, the patient said that he was “injured by some blunt object."

The doctor stated that the patient is currently under medically induced sleep and on mechanical ventilation, in line with his post-traumatic condition. "At this stage, the patient's condition is consistent with his post-traumatic state. He is under medically induced sleep, with stable hemodynamics," said Nino Kharaishvili.

Aleko Tirkia's uncle, Ioseb Chanadiri, explained that the boy and his girlfriend were surrounded by law enforcement officers and shot at with gas canisters.

"He called his grandmother and told her that he was surrounded and could not leave. He was with his girlfriend, and while talking to his grandmother, one canister hit the girl in the leg, and another hit her in the face. He was taken away by protesters," said the victim's uncle.

"Aleko is a very innocent, most lovable young man, and his parents are immigrants. They left a 'prosperous' country in search of a better life," his uncle added.

Over the past five nights, police forces have used water cannons and large amounts of tear gas to disperse protests on Rustaveli Avenue and in surrounding areas. The riot police have been brutally beating demonstrators. According to the Ministry of Health, emergency medical teams have taken 26 people to medical facilities since the December 2 protest, 23 of whom were protesters, and 3 were employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
