The Ministry of Internal Affairs has arrested Aleksandre Elisashvili, one of the leaders of the Strong Georgia coalition and a member of parliament in the 10th convocation.

The information about this was initially spread by government media. According to Imedi TV company, Elisashvili was arrested for attacking Ali Babaev, the chairman of the National Congress of Azerbaijanis in Georgia.

Two days ago, Babaev claimed that Elisashvili verbally and physically abused him. He stated that the incident occurred on the evening of December 2, at a pharmacy near the Philharmonic Hall. Babaev told TV Imedi that Aleksandre Elisashvili called him a “scoundrel”, a "slave” of the Georgian Dream, and Russia.

"He touched me several times, and eventually, I passed out and lost consciousness. I called an ambulance, and now I am in the hospital, undergoing a medical examination. I have known Aleko Elisashvili for a long time, and we had no prior conflict. I only wrote once on social media that what he did when he suddenly struck Mr. Mamuka Mdinaradze at the committee meeting was an unmanly act. I request that he be punished immediately," Babaev said during the Imedi broadcast.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Elisashvili was arrested under the second part of Article 156 of the Criminal Code, which addresses the persecution of a person due to their speech, opinion, conscience, confession, faith, or belief, or in relation to their political, public, professional, religious, or scientific activities, accompanied by violence or threats of violence.

The crime is punishable by a fine or house arrest for a term of one to two years, or imprisonment for up to three years, along with deprivation of the right to hold office or work for up to three years.
