"The Prime Minister of Hungary, Mr. Orban does not represent the European Union during his visit to Georgia," Borrell said in an interview with Spanish radio, noting that he, as the head of the European Union Council elected by rotation, has no authority in foreign policy.
The Prime Minister of Hungary will visit today, October 28, alongside the Georgian government delegation.
Viktor Orban is the only leader of an EU member state who congratulated Georgian Dream on its victory in the parliamentary elections. On October 26, even before the announcement of the preliminary results from the Central Election Commission, he wrote on Platform X: "Congratulations to Prime Minister PM_Kobakhidze and the Georgian Dream party on their overwhelming victory at the parliamentary elections today. The people of Georgia know what is best for their country, and made their voice heard today!!"
At the same time, the foreign ministers of several European Union countries, as well as representatives of the United Kingdom government, are calling on the Georgian authorities to investigate the violations revealed during the elections.
"We call on the Central Election Commission of Georgia and other relevant authorities to fulfill their duty to swiftly, transparently and independently investigate and adjudicate electoral irregularities and allegations thereof. Those irregularities must be clarified and addressed. That is a necessary step to rebuilding trust in the electoral process," said Josep Borrell and the European Commission in a joint statement.
As per Central Election Commission data, Georgian Dream received 53.92% of the votes in the elections. The legitimacy of the results is not recognized by the opposition parties and the country's president. According to Salome Zourabichvili, the elections were completely rigged, and a "Russian special operation" was conducted.
