Lammy stated in a statement that the shocking scenes of violence by Georgian authorities against protesters and journalists are unacceptable and must cease.
“These actions harm Georgia's international positions and contradict Georgia's constitutional commitment to the European future.
In view of the current events, the United Kingdom immediately suspends program support to the Government of Georgia, limits cooperation in the field of defense and reduces engagement with representatives of the "Georgian Dream" government, until the retreat from European democratic norms and freedoms is stopped.
The United Kingdom will continue to stand by the people of Georgia and support their right to choose the future of their country,” the statement read.
Georgia’s illegitimate government has decided not to put the issue of opening EU accession negotiations on the agenda until the end of 2028, which has led to protests across the country involving thousands of people.
During the 11 days of protests, police forces have repeatedly dispersed civilians protesting the country’s pro-European course. Special forces have physically assaulted both protesters and media representatives. More than 400 people have been arrested.
The leaders of the United States and the European Union have expressed support for the Georgian people while condemning the excessive use of force against protesters.
The decisions of the Georgian Dream leaders are being praised in the Kremlin, and, like them, comparisons are being made between the events in Georgia and the Maidan revolution in Ukraine in 2014.
