At today's briefing, party member Levan Gogichaishvili stated that it is likely the decisions made to suppress the so-called riot at the N5 penitentiary in 2006 were coordinated with Givi Mikanadze, who was the Deputy Minister of Justice of Georgia at the time.
"On March 27, 2006, during the so-called prison riot at the 5th Penitentiary Institution of Georgia, seven prisoners were killed, and 22 were injured as a result of chaotic shooting by special forces members. The life-threatening and inhumane treatment of prisoners by the special forces continued even after the riot was suppressed. Bacho Akhalaia, who led the bloody suppression of the so-called rebellion, was the head of the Penitentiary Department of the Ministry of Justice. These events have been confirmed by both the Strasbourg Court's decision on April 2, 2020, and Georgian court rulings.
During these tragic events, Givi Mikanadze, now the acting deputy in Parliament, held the post of Deputy Minister of Justice, overseeing the penitentiary system. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that Givi Mikanadze was aware of the developments in the prison and was involved in decision-making. This information, which has been available to both the public and investigative bodies, clearly contains signs of a potential crime, obligating the investigative bodies to promptly launch an investigation. Accordingly, we call on the prosecutor's office to investigate the possible involvement of Givi Mikanadze, the acting deputy of Georgian Dream, in the crime," said Levan Gogichaishvili.
He added that the party Gakharia - For Georgia will continue to provide information regarding potential crimes committed by members of Georgian Dream, who at the time served the National Movement.
Givi Mikanadze, who became a member of Parliament in 2020 on the party list of Georgian Dream, currently chairs the Committee on Education, Science, and Youth Affairs. He served as Deputy Minister of Justice from 2005 to 2008. On October 25, 2005, the Ministry of Justice announced that Mikanadze would be responsible for overseeing the reform of the penitentiary system.
