The Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Garibashvili, who is currently in China, and the President of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping, agreed on a strategic partnership, informs the administration of the Government of Georgia.

“It has been 31 years since we established diplomatic relations. China-Georgia relations are developing in a healthy and stable manner. The political trust between the two countries is solid, and the results of cooperation in various fields are demonstrable. Georgia is a friend and good partner of China. No matter how things develop in the international arena, China’s attitude towards developing relations with Georgia will not change.
A joint statement will be issued during the course of your visit to China. It will be announced that Georgia and China are establishing a strategic partnership, thus our bilateral relations will move to a new level.
China and Georgia should work together to give impetus to the better development of our strategic partnership from this new beginning, promote the development of various fields of the two countries, and contribute to the welfare of mankind,” said Xi Jinping.
According to Irakli Garibashvili, Georgia highly values its friendship with China and is grateful for the decision to elevate the relationship between the two countries to a strategic partnership.
“China was one of the first to recognize Georgia's independence in 1992 when we restored sovereignty. Georgia is committed to the idea of deepening trade and economic ties with China in many directions, and we are glad that important documents will be signed within the framework of this visit,” said Garibashvili.
The Prime Minister of Georgia is visiting the People’s Republic of China along with a delegation. Garibashvili participates in the opening ceremony of the Summer World University Games.
Three months ago, on April 21, the Chinese ambassador to France, Lu Shaye, said in a televised interview while speaking about Ukraine and Crimea that the former Soviet states have no real status in international law, with which the ambassador called into question the sovereignty of the post-Soviet countries.
“These post-Soviet countries have no real status in international law because there is no international agreement that acknowledges their status as a sovereign state,” after this controversial statement of Lu Shaye, the foreign ministries of the Baltic countries summoned their Chinese ambassadors for explanations.
The French President also responded to this statement of the ambassador. Emmanuel Macron said that it is not fitting for a diplomat to talk in this manner. The Government of Georgia did not react to the statement of the Chinese ambassador.
On April 24, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement saying that China respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries.
By 2022 data, China is the largest export partner of Georgia with 736.8 million US dollars. It is followed by Azerbaijan (US$672.6 million) and Russia (US$651.6 million). Then comes Armenia (584.5 million USD), Turkey (435.4 million USD), Bulgaria (423.6 million USD), USA (265 million USD), Kazakhstan (238.1 million USD), Ukraine (232 million USD), and Peru (153.8 million USD).
In the same period, among the largest import partners, China ranks third (US$ 1,126.0 million) after Turkey (US$ 2,370.9 million) and Russia (US$ 1,835.4 million).
The largest projects in Georgia, especially in the construction of highways, railways, and tunnels, are carried out by China.
