With the context of the war in Ukraine, Georgia becomes the second-largest importer of wine in Russia. According to the Russian publication Kommersant, owing to the ease of payment transfers and absence of logistical complications, Georgia has exported 13.1 million liters of wine to Russia between January and March, a 49% increase from last year.

Leapfrogging Spain with its 12.2 Russia-bound liters, these figures place Georgia 2nd only to Italy.
Georgia’s growing share in Russia’s alcohol market is not limited to wine, either. Imports of sparkling wine from Georgia have increased 8.5 times, amounting to 371.99 liters, and Georgian Cognac and Brandy import volume ballooned to 2.66 million liters (120% growth), which makes up 60% of total imports in this category.
The company LADOGA, one of the market leaders in Russia’s alcohol industry, has increased Georgian wine imports by 29%. In an interview with Kommersant, the company development director, Dmitry Isachenkov, states that they have initiated imports from Teliani, which has been absent from the Russian market for several years prior. Representative of another company, Luding Group, Andrey Ushakov points to a noticeable increase in sparkling wine imports, including that reflected on brand Askaneli’s development sheets.
Russia expects Georgia will only solidify its second place in wine exports to Russia going forward.
National Wine Agency of Georgia never published the statistical records on January-March alcohol exports. According to this data, 56 million $ worth of wine was exported during this period, 38 of which was to Russia.
