„We are closer [to Russia] and we are much better known as people, our character… by the Russian services. So, you know, it’s easier for them to interfere in Georgia because it is known ground for them. And at the same time, the Georgian people are also well experienced with Soviet propaganda, which is not very different from the Russian propaganda of today. So, maybe their [people's] resilience is a bit higher, but we are going to be exposed, we are exposed, and we are going to be more exposed during this year because it’s near for parliamentary elections by October. So I am sure that we can expect many interference. The hybrid war is going on towards Georgia“ Zurabishvili said.
However, Zurabishvili does not think that anything can change in the relations between Georgia and Russia: “The only thing that can change the situation is Russia's withdrawal from all occupied territories - be it Ukraine or be it Georgia. That is the future of European security, not a country that is next to Europe that occupies independent countries’ territories.”
During the interview, the journalist noted that Salome Zurabishvili went to the Munich conference without the government's permission and asked her about the political battles going on inside the country, in Georgia, regarding the EU expansion.
“Like in any country, there are internal political battles, but what is very important for people outside of Georgia to know is that the European path is fully agreed upon by the Georgian people and has been the case for the last 30 years since our independence - the Georgian people have supported the Georgian way to Europe and it has never changed not when Georgia was occupied, invaded, and It will not change in the future because it is the only perspective that exists for this country,” answered Salome Zurabishvili.
The Munich Conference, held annually since 1963, is the premier global forum on international security issues. A few days before the event, the 2024 report of the conference was published, in which Bidzina Ivanishvili, the former Prime Minister of Georgia and the honorary chairman of the ruling party Georgian Dream, is referred to as a “pro-Russian oligarch.” The report also mentions that he is responsible for Georgia's democratic backsliding.
