At a press conference at the White House, Joe Biden stated that asylum will remain available to migrants who come to the United States legally.
“But if an individual chooses not to use our legal pathways, if they choose to come without permission and against the law, they’ll be restricted from receiving asylum and staying in the United States. This action will help us to gain control of our border, restore order to the process. This ban will remain in place until the number of people trying to enter illegally is reduced to a level that our system can effectively manage,” said Joe Biden.
CNN reports that senior officials in the Biden administration have informed the media that if more than 2 500 people are detained at the border each day, the ban will go into effect and will be lifted when the number of detentions drops to 1,500. Currently, more than 4,000 illegal migrants are detained at the US-Mexico border daily.
Exceptions will be made for unaccompanied children, victims of trafficking, and individuals with serious medical conditions or safety risks.
White House officials state that the restriction is temporary and will be lifted as soon as the number of migrants returns to a safe and manageable level.
Thousands of Georgian citizens are also attempting to enter the USA through the Mexican border.
