Illegally Detained Ramaz Begheluri Released from Tskhinvali

The Russian law of the Georgian Dream party threatens independent media and civil society organizations and hinders Georgia from joining the European Union.

Russian law establishes Putin's rules in Georgia, which has eliminated free speech in Russia.

Ramaz Begheluri, a resident of the village of Gugutiantkari in the Gori municipality, was released from prison in the occupied Tskhinvali region. According to the de facto State Security Committee, the Georgian citizen was handed over to the Georgian side today, October 4, at the Ergneti checkpoint.

Representatives of the Russian occupation forces arrested 40-year-old Ramaz Begheluri at the end of April on charges of illegally crossing the so-called state border. According to his family, he was arrested while cleaning his brother's grave at the cemetery. In July, it was reported that he had been sentenced to eight months in prison.

"On October 4, due to the expiration of his sentence, he was released and handed over to the Georgian side according to the established procedure," said the de facto authorities.

The central government also released information about Begeluri's release. According to the State Security Service of Georgia, both the "hotline" mechanism, which operates with the direct involvement of the European Union Monitoring Mission (EUMM) in Georgia, and all relevant tools at the disposal of the central government were actively utilized in the process. The issue was discussed at Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism (IPRM) meetings and international discussions in Geneva.

"The central government, together with international partners, will continue to work actively to secure the release of all Georgian citizens who are illegally detained in the occupied territories," stated the Security Council.

Ten citizens of Georgia remain in illegal detention in the occupied Tskhinvali region.
