In Armenia, the road to Georgia is blocked for residents at the Kirants-Voskepar section. Locals are conducting the rally after learning three days ago that Armenia and Azerbaijan reached a preliminary agreement on border delimitation in some border areas of Tavush-Gazakh.

The available information indicates that in the process of establishing the border, Armenia will hand over four settlements in the Tavush district to Azerbaijan, which have been under Armenian control since the 1990s.

The Tavush region Residents are dissatisfied with the agreement. They argue that the safety of the population is in danger because the military posts of Azerbaijan will be very close to the settlements. Additionally, the protestors say they will lose access to agricultural land and will face difficulties in communication. They are not planning to stop protesting.

As reported by the Armenian Service of Radio Liberty, the participants of the rally will meet with Vice Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan today. Prior to this, they had refused to come to Yerevan, stating their expectation for officials to visit Tavush and address their concerns there.

On April 19, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia disseminated information about the results of the eighth session of the state commissions for the delimitation of the state border between Armenia and Azerbaijan. According to the statement, at the initial stage of delimitation, the parties agreed in advance to pass separate sections of the border line directly between the following settlements:

  • Baghanis (Armenia) - Baghanis-Airum (Azerbaijan)
  • Voskepar (Armenia) - Ashadhi Askipara (Azerbaijan)
  • Kirants (Armenia) - Xeyrimli (Azerbaijan)
  • Berkaber (Armenia) - Kizilajlo

"Azerbaijan receives 2.5 villages that belong to it because Azerbaijan controlled the entire territory of the village of Kizilajlo and a significant part of the territory of the village of Ashadhi Askipara. In this process, the Republic of Armenia will reduce risks related to border delimitation and security. This is the first time we have demarcated the border with Azerbaijan, which can be called an important event," said the Public Relations Department of the Armenian Prime Minister Office.

Azerbaijan and Armenia have agreed that the basis of the delimitation process will be the 1991 Alma-Ata declaration.
