More than 9,000 Georgian Citizens Applied for Asylum in Germany in 2023

9,399 citizens of Georgia applied for asylum in Germany in 2023, with 8,414 submitting applications for the first time and 985 reapplying. According to the report from the Federal Agency for Migration and Refugees, a total of 10,038 applications from Georgian citizens were processed last year, with only 0.3% receiving approval.

The legal status of a refugee was granted to 8 citizens, while additional protection was afforded to two, and a deportation ban was established for 21 citizens. However, 7,964 citizens of Georgia were denied their requests, citing reasons such as being unsubstantiated or groundless. Formal decisions were made regarding 2,413 applications.

Georgia ranked sixth in the number of foreign citizens seeking asylum in Germany in 2023. The top five countries were Syria (104,561 citizen applications), Turkey (62,624), Afghanistan (53,582), Iraq (12,360), and Iran (10,206). Following Georgia in sixth place were Russia (9,028), Somalia (5,773), and Eritrea (4,230)."

Overall, the number of asylum seekers in Germany increased last year, with the federal agency receiving a total of 351,915 initial and repeated applications in January-December. This marks a 44.1% increase compared to 2022, during which there were 244,132 asylum requests.

In August 2023, Germany designated Georgia as a safe country, and by the end of the year, an agreement was signed between the two nations aimed at bolstering efforts against illegal migration. On December 19, during her visit to Tbilisi, the Federal Minister of the Interior of Germany, Nancy Fesser, announced an information campaign to ensure that Georgian citizens are aware of the limited chances of obtaining asylum in Germany.
