Netherlands Ambassador Responds to Samkharadze on EC Report: No, That Is Not The Case

The Russian law of the Georgian Dream party threatens independent media and civil society organizations and hinders Georgia from joining the European Union.

Russian law establishes Putin's rules in Georgia, which has eliminated free speech in Russia.

When you are oppressed, there will be no one to cover your problem and stand by you.

Georgian News will resist the Russian intention of the Georgian Dream to the end!

The Ambassador of the Netherlands to Georgia, Meline Arakelian, stated that the claim made by Nikoloz Samkharadze, the Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Georgian Parliament, suggesting that the European Commission's enlargement report confirms Georgia's progress, is inaccurate. In response, she remarked that "no, that is not the case."

"EU Commission enlargement report on Georgia notes different levels of progress in 25 out of 35 enlargement chapters throughout the last 12 months. Thus, contrary to many allegations and speculations Georgia is progressing on the EU path/is still ahead of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Moldova and Ukraine in fundamental rights' chapter," wrote the Georgian Dream MP.

Meline Arakelian shared Nikoloz Samkharadze's statement with the following text:

"No Mr Samkharadze , that is not the case. Georgia is NOT progressing on its EU-path as long as there is backsliding in the area of democracy/fundamental rights. Georgia’s EU-accession process is stopped because of this.."

In its annual report on EU enlargement, published on October 30, the European Commission states that Georgia's accession process is de facto suspended, citing actions taken by the Georgian government, including the adoption of "foreign agents" and anti-LGBTQ laws. The European Commission indicated that it will not recommend opening accession talks with Georgia unless the country changes course.
